three brothers and three sisters
were raised by both of their parents,
who loved them all very much.
Because her parents do not make
enough money to pay for Joan to
continue her education, a
sponsorship to Daraja was critical
to her future. “If not for Daraja,
right at this moment I would be at
home frying fish, helping to cook
and clean and take care of my
siblings,” Joan said.
Joan says she will work tirelessly to
make the most of the opportunity to
attend the Daraja Academy.
“I will work hard, and when I grow
up I will be a teacher at Daraja,”
Joan said. “I want to have skills and
knowledge to pass along to more
Daraja girls.” Joan is confident that
as a teacher, she can help girls like
herself out of poverty
