I never imagined, at the time, that my high school track days would impact me in the future. You see, I was never very fast and usually finished last in my long distance events. Nevertheless, I joined the track team every year for 4 years as though somehow that year I would be faster. I didn’t letter in track, didn’t qualify for states nor did I get track scholarship offers from colleges. After high school, my running shoes were tossed aside for 17 years.
In December 2012, like many people do at the anticipation of a new year, I made a resolution; a resolution that 2013 was the year I would start running again. With the support of my sister, Sara, running along side me, I began a couch to 5K program on January 7, 2013. My sister and I successfully completed the program and ran our first 5K race in March 2013. Okay, so now what? Keep going! Over the last year, I’ve run over 525 miles, lost 50 pounds, and figured out the lesson my track days taught me: Finishing what was started is what really matters in life!
During my hours of running over the last year I’ve spent much of that time in pray about my family, my friends, our farm, our church, our school and our community, but God has consistently brought to the front of my mind and my heart the people that may be impacted by my story. Adults and children, who like me, have struggles with fitness and weight, who aren't the best, but by the grace of God can finish their own race, whatever that race happens to be.
God has given me the desire to continue my race, so on May 4th I’ll be running a half marathon in the Pittsburgh Marathon races. I’ve joined the Joshua House team, whose goal is "to build a better community by impacting kids, teens and young adults through Athletics, Education & Faith". The goal this year is to raise $17,500 as a team, with my individual goal being $350. I will be doing several fundraisers in order to meet my goal, but I ask that you prayerfully consider donating to this cause. I also ask that you pray for me, as I continue to train, and pray for the people that will be impacted by this organization and me.
