Rachel Anne Morrison, age 27, was a fourth year PHD student in Marine Biology at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, when she was fatally struck by a hit and run drunk driver on Friday, March 28, 2014.
Rachel was born a true prodigy! She was Valedictorian of her senior class and won the prestigious Cardinal Medeiros Scholarship, a four year scholarship to BU where she graduated Magna Cum Laude in Marine Science. She went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Marine Biology and was working towards her Doctorate at Scripps.
Aburto-Oropeza, one of her advisors at Scripts describes his interaction with Rachel as "one of the most dynamic collaborations of his life". Her colleague Michael Navarro's stated "another heaven and earth must pass before there will be another Rachel Morrison."
Rachel leaves behind her loving family; parents Jeanne and John, brother John Jr., sisters Julie and Sarah, and fiancée Jesper Mortensen.
On June 21, 2014, Rachel's family and friends at Scripps have organized a run on the beach, the same course she often ran. This will be the first official "Rachel's Run." Money raised from this run will be put towards the Rachel Morrison Memorial Fund at Scripps.
In addition, money raised by this fundraiser will be used to promote Rachel's marine conservation efforts in coral reef ecology, fisheries management and promoting women in science.
