BENEFITING: Cancer Research Institute, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Nov 02, 2014
As a lot of my friends and family know, I love to run. This fall, I'm running for an important reason: to raise money for the Cancer Research Institute, an organization that's leading the way in immunotherapy research. Unlike chemo and radiation, this treatment trains the immune system to recognize and target only cancer cells. It's a treatment approach that can be applied universally, to all cancers, with few if any side effects. Maybe you've heard of the vaccine against cancer-causing HPV---that's immunotherapy at work. Want to know more? Check out this awesome infographic (English major-friendly!).
So Here's the Deal
I'm running the City of Oaks Half Marathon in Raleigh on November 2nd in honor of my sister-in-law, Erica Borriello Sternberg, who was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma and just started chemo. Erica is 32, has a two-year-old daughter, and is herself in the biomedical field. She's one tough cookie, and she's going to beat this like a boss. By the time Erica's daughter is her age, though, cancer should and can be a thing of the past, just like smallpox or polio. (Or any of these other diseases of yesteryear.) But researchers need your support to make this happen.
Almost everyone knows someone who has--or will be--impacted by cancer during their lifetime. Please consider contributing.
Make Me Run FAST
To honor your donation, I'm going to finish 13.1 miles in two hours or less, which means I'll have to run faster than I've ever run before. How much faster, you say? Well, my fastest half marathon is 2:10, so to run in 2 hours or less, I'll have to shave off almost a minute per mile. That's a lot! Needless to say, I'm training hard with my team at Fleet Feet, and mentoring first-time half marathoners along the way.
Give Love, Get Love!
You'll be powering my race, so I want you to be a part of it no matter where you are.
Be one of the first 14 donors, and I'll dedicate a mile of the race to you. You can even pick which mile if you want. (And you bet that last tenth of a mile is up for grabs!)
Be one of the first 50 donors, and pick a song for my race-day playlist. Love to run to Beyonce? Want me to haul it to Howlin' Wolf? Pick up the pace to Prince? Bring it.
Be one of the first 100 donors, and while taking my first-ever postrace ice bath, I'll recite your name backward. In a kiddie pool in my backyard. In November. Try figuring out the reverse of "Anonymous" with your teeth chattering!
Writers & Clients: Donate $25 or more before November 2, and I'll "page it forward" by editing 6 pages (1500 words) of your work. If we've worked together before, you know that's a great value. If we haven't, what better time to polish up those pages and get some good feedback?
Where Will My Donation Go?
I know you get a lot of requests to contribute to campaigns like this one. That's why I've done my homework on CRI to make sure your donation will be well spent.
Here's what you should know: CRI has 4-star rating (95.76/100) from Charity Navigator and an A rating from Charity Watch. A remarkable 83.2% of the funds they receive are spent on the programs and services they deliver.
If you're still with me, thanks. It means a lot to me that you've taken the time to read this.
In sneakers and with gratitude,
