Running a marathon has always been a personal goal of mine, and I marked 2012 as the year I would finally complete one (fingers crossed!). I had the SF Marathon picked out months ago, but it wasn't until recently that I decided that I wanted to do some sort of a charity tie-in. It was then that I decided to run for Organs R Us. I chose this charity in honor of my brother Jason (or Jaso, as I like to call him).
June 21 will mark 4 years since he became a living donor by donating a kidney to his co-worker's wife. Since his donation, he has become an advocate for building awareness surrounding kidney donation, and I want to help him spread the word. Please take a moment to view his story here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3jIBqwSUFQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Please partner with us to raise awareness and to spread education surrounding organ donation.
ABOUT THE CHARITY:
FOUNDED in 1996, Organs 'R' Us promotes the need for organ donors. Through walking and running, transplant recipients, candidates, organ donors, donor family members and others have generated $25 million of publicity promoting organ donation. Although started in the San Francisco Bay Area, ORU has grown throughout the US. Through participation in athletic events selected for maximum publicity and fun, this group showcases their fitness proving that organ transplantation saves lives.
Pledge your support for 96,000 Americans (including 2,500 children) waiting for organs. 18 die each day before a donor is found. Since communicating a desire to donate will allow grieving relatives to make an informed decision, ORU encourages family discussions, not about death, but about offering a life saving gift.
