BENEFITING: RACQUET UP DETROIT
Detroit is clearly in the process of a resurgence, but it is still a very difficult time to be growing up in the city. Young people face significant challenges in a tumultuous school system, as well as a range of social issues that can prevent them from realizing their potential. Educational attainment remains lower than the national average, with literacy being particularly poor. Health is also a concern, with many families finding it difficult to access good nutrition and young people having limited opportunities for physical activity. This is why quality out-of-school programming can really make a difference.
As I prepare to run my second 5k, I am fundraising for a local and very deserving non-profit. Racquet Up Detroit provides intensive, holistic education and youth development to students over many years. The program engages young people from northwest Detroit through sport, but education and character development are the true focus - the goal for all students is high school graduation and college enrollment. But the program needs our support. It receives no public funding and relies on the generosity of the community to deliver for young people.
