BENEFITING: Chicago Childrens Choir
EVENT DATE: Jul 20, 2015
I’m cycling across Iowa in this year’s 500-mile RAGBRAI ride (July 19 – 25) and am dedicating each day in support of an important charitable organization. I’ll use the ride as an opportunity to raise funds and help create awareness for these organizations and the causes they support.
The Chicago Children's Choir is among the organizations I’ll be supporting during RAGBRAI. Day 2 (July 20th, Storm Lake to Fort Dodge) will be in support of the Choir and their important work.
Serving more than 4,000 children annually, Chicago Children's Choir empowers singers to bridge cultural divides and become ambassadors of peace in their communities. With programs in more than 70 Chicago schools, 9 after-school neighborhood programs, an ensemble for boys with changing voices and the internationally-acclaimed Voice of Chicago, the diversity of Chicago Children's Choir reflects the cultural landscape of the city.
Our destination on Day 2 is Storm Lake, located in the state's most racially diverse county -- the public schools are more than 80 percent non-white, with 18 languages spoken. More than 50% of students are Hispanic and more than 10% are Asian. And because 40% of the district's students are migrant, schools struggle to match needs set by the No Child Left Behind Act. However, the school district is known throughout the state for its excellence in fine arts. Its music programs are especially noteworthy, having been honored with various awards including the Iowa Music Educators Association Exemplary Music Program of the Year.
If you'd like to join me in supporting the Chicago Children's Choir, please donate here! Thanks!
