BENEFITING: NM PRODUCTIONS THEATRE COMPANY
Rainbow Arts Kids is a fledgling program to provide the 376 children at Portland's Grout Elementary School children with the first visual arts program in seven years and build its struggling drama program. Grout has 75% very low income students many who are from immigrant and Native American families. For the first time in seven years there is an art teacher, but she has no supplies beyond what she buys herself or scrounges from recycling bins. Some basic supplies such as paper, paint, easels, brushes, mixers...would really help tap into these kids visual creativity. I've hooked them up with an art therapist to work with some of the large number of emotionaly disturbed and autistic students but they need things to help them create.
The established drama program (provided by non-profit New Moon Productions - see video), gives every student in Grout school, including those in special education, the opportunity once a year to be a star! Benefits include team-work and presentation skills, an outlet for pent-up emotions and energy, and gains in self-confidence. They need theatre equipment to replace very old, poor and possibly becoming dangerous lights, sound system and disintegrating curtains & to pay talented and dedicated staff previously paid by a few grants no longer available.
1/4 of donations will go for art supplies and 3/4 of donations will go for staff and equipment for the drama program. Even small donations will make a difference.
