BENEFITING: WALKING WITH ANTHONY
My name is Jessica (“Jesse”) Hubert. I am a 30 year old professional and a single mom from the Chicago area. I graduated from the University of Maryland’s Fire Protection Engineering program in May, 2006. Shortly after completing my MBA, I began a career in research and development for the Fire Protection Suppression Systems Industry. That day in July of 2013 began as any other. I was embracing life as a single parent. I went to work out and became paralyzed from the waist down after a terrible accident during my workout. It took me 6 months to have my insurance corrected, 8 months to receive Social Security Disability, and 9 months to get my own wheelchair.
I have spent my days pushing with everything I have to learn to walk again and recover my independence. With fundraising and help from loved ones I was able to attend Project Walk in Carlsbad, CA for 2 weeks in January. The ability to see a path toward recovery lifted my spirits and hopes tremendously. I regained much of my sitting balance and core strength and am still seeing progress there. I am constantly regaining balance and strength and can now take steps with a walker, can balance standing on my own for about 2 seconds, and have seen some improvement with assisted squats. Shortly after Project Walk, I discovered Next Steps Chicago, much closer. Walking With Anthony is giving me the opportunity to continue my recovery there as I make strides in my new life.
After meeting other courageous people with spinal cord injuries, I realize that my experience with access (or lack thereof) to recovery programs is universal. I don’t even want to imagine my life without rehabilitation and yet I know there are many who are not offered such access. I am supporting Walking With Anthony because they refuse to accept the notion that people suffering a spinal cord injury should be forgotten. They help as many people as possible and need your help to help more. I am an example of what happens when someone with SCI experiences recovery. Please donate today.
WHY WE DO THIS
Insurance does not cover a Spinal Cord Injury. There are many issues beyond the inability to walk after a spinal cord injury. Most suffering from this life altering injury do not have the resources necessary to achieve a fruitful recovery. Walking With Anthony is on a mission to give those less fortunate back their quality of life. Whether it's an equipped van, all terrain wheelchair or physical therapy, these individuals are desperate for our help so they can gain the mobility they need to live stronger, healthier, more independent lives.
