Raising Awareness: Religious Effect on Women's Oppression
Organized by: Kate Kwak
While women in the U.S. and other western countries experience “moderate” sexual inequality on social, economic and political grounds, it is a shocking figure that millions of women in many parts of the world are abandoned to illiteracy, subjugation, domestic violence, and honor killings––traditions justified by and persisted through religious teachings and laws. As a devout feminist, I really want to raise awareness on the downside of religion that has played a critical role in the persistence of women’s oppression through a piece of visual art that reports the the horrific state these women are in and that criticizes those who object to any scrutiny or critique of a religion in the name of cultural relativism and religious sensitivity. Holding any religion up to scrutiny on its effects on human rights should not be confused with xenophobia, arrogance, or cultural intolerance. Especially in a country where even the liberals are so cautious of making even valid criticism of a religion, we really need people to be aware of the dehumanizing aspects that some religions endorse. The art will be reproduced as posters and flyers for people to observe and reflect on, and I hope to raise $160 for this valuable cause that I have been very passionate about for many years.
