THE STORY:

Dear Family and Friends!

I am running the Miami Half Marathon on Sunday to benefit the Blue Card, an organization that raises money for Miami-Dade's neediest Holocaust Survivors. This year we are trying to smash our previous goal and bring renewed focus on this important charity. I will be running the Half Marathon as part of this effort.

In 2009, during my gap year in Israel, I visited Poland for a week to get a better understanding of the Holocaust. I was overcome with pain and sadness to see first-hand the suffering and torture of millions of Jews. Ever since that experience, I have felt and even stronger connection to Judaism and all of the courageous men, women, and children who persevered through the toughest times imaginable.

More than 75,000 Holocaust survivors live in the United States today, and nearly a third of those live beneath the poverty level. As these men and women age, they are plagued with the consequences of surviving the most devastating conditions imaginable, including poor nutrition and no medical care.

Many survivors came to this country after World War II and worked in menial jobs. Tiny pensions from those jobs, social security, and Medicaid simply cannot keep up with the financial needs of this most vulnerable population. Most of them never received any pensions or payments administered by The Claims Conference. They are frequently desperate for uncovered expenses such as dental care, hearing aids, and transportation to doctors.

After all they have suffered, these men and women SHOULD NOT have to chose between paying for food or paying for medicine. Dignity was forcibly taken from them during the Holocaust, and The Blue Card ensures that its clients don't lose their dignity again, in their last years.

Any donation is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your generosity!

Please contact me at (650) 273-3672 if you have any questions.
