Chicago Youth Shakespeare (CYS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to placing Shakespeare’s timeless works in the hands of 21st -century teenagers. CYS programs inspire, empower, and connect students across Chicagoland to Shakespeare and to each other. CYS is committed to providing young artists of all backgrounds and income levels with a safe and supportive creative environment, to ensuring the accessibility of arts programming to students of every background and income level, and to fostering a diverse community of creative thinkers and compassionate global citizens.
In just three years, CYS programs have impacted over 4000 students from more than 60 different public, private, and parochial schools in the Chicago area. CYS has granted over $50,000 in need-based program scholarships, helped student teams raise over $5,000 to support arts programming in public schools, and CYS continues to bring free Shakespeare performances to hundreds of new students each year.
The Chicago Youth Shakespeare Ensemble (CYSE) is our flagship program, bringing together talented high school students from across the city and suburbs to form Chicago’s only all-teen, performing Shakespeare company. Representing a variety of communities, ethnicities, cultures, and life experiences, CYSE student actors are part of a unique artistic ensemble fueled by collaboration, innovation, and a diversity of approaches and ideas. Admissions are need-blind and based on audition only. Nearly half of all CYSE students represent low income households, and CYS guarantees program scholarships in the form of program fee waivers to all students demonstrating financial need.
Battle of the Bard, BOTB (a collaborative program with Chicago Shakespeare Theater since 2015) is a region-wide series of Shakespeare slam events, uniting students from more than forty different public, private and parochial high schools across the region. Students and their teachers participate in Saturday workshops and regional Preliminary Bouts where teams perform Shakespeare scenes plus their own creative mash-ups from the canon in a high energy, slam-style arena. The program culminates in a Finals Bout on the mainstage at Chicago Shakespeare Theater on Navy Pier.
The CYS in Schools program offers a variety of performance-based learning opportunities for students and their teachers during the school day. Workshops and residencies are designed specifically for each school's curriculum and student learning goals, and can range in scope from a single workshop to multi-day immersions and long-term residency programs.
CYS launched all three of its programs with virtually no initial funding, and continues to manage its rapidly expanding programs with very limited resources. Become a Friend of CYS and take pride in knowing that your gift keeps this life-changing opportunity open to teenagers from across our region.
