The Story

EVENT DATE: Jan 07, 2016

The Alan T Brown Foundation was established 27 years ago when Alan T. Brown, the Foundation’s namesake, was injured in a water accident while vacationing in Martinique at the age of 20. ATBF has and will continue to help paralyzed individuals and their families realize that there can be a better quality of life after paralysis. Daniel and Steven, Alan’s brothers, were both on the Ramaz hockey team. Steven was the Coach of the Ramaz Rams during their Championship season.

ATBF is a strong force in the paralysis community and serves as a main support system for people with paralysis and their loved ones and assists individuals in achieving goals they never thought possible. The four most common causes of paralysis are stroke, head injury, spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis. While the majority of individuals that are referred to us have spinal cord injury, the Foundation has assisted many elderly people who have had strokes resulting in paralysis and have experienced a tremendous increase in these referalls over the last year. ATBF is a funding partner to many organizations that take on life-changing quality of life initiatives such as our Transition Care Program, which provides home care for under-insured paralyzed individuals; a Health & Fitness Program at Mount Sinai Hospital, which provides emotional, physical and mental health through exercise and wellness activities; and The Axis Project, a multidisciplinary center blocks from Central Park that offers programs and activities that motivate people with physical disabilities to pursue a healthy, active lifestyle designed to be comprehensive and to benefit a person’s physical and emotional well-being, as well as provide valuable support for community/independent living. Between periods at the game, a member of the ATBF community will speak about our life-changing work.
