THE STORY:

In honor of our beloved brother, son, family member and friend, Randall Gregg, this Memorial Charity Fund will be divided among causes he held dear in addition to creating a new cause in his name, enabling him to continue his lasting legacy of creating good in the world.

Born in Greensboro, NC, Randall "Randy" Gregg was a rare sort of person, an entrepreneur at heart, a lawyer by schooling, a supporter of those who needed help, an accomplished photographer and a dedicated journalist. He founded eight news publications over the last 15 years, including The Raleigh Telegram, The Sun of Guilford County, The Triangle TechJournal, The Raleigh Downtowner and RTP-TV, to name a few. Randall was an avid boatman and a relentless adventurer who wasn’t afraid of doing things his own way. He volunteered as an embedded journalist accompanying the Air Force in Haiti right after the earthquake, covered Hurricane Irene in Pamlico as it happened and wrote thousand of articles in his pursuit to tell the untold story. He was proud to have met four American Presidents, was interviewed on CNN and other national news shows several times and published four photography books of his travels and adventures. Randall's kindness was only surpassed by his sense of humor and his effortless way of making everyone around him smile.

He was a 44-year-old kid at heart when he passed on April 25, 2014, enjoying one of his favorite pastimes of riding motorcycles. He is survived by his mother and father, Grace and Stewart Gregg of the Greensboro area, and brothers Crash (Scott) and Eric of Raleigh. He leaves behind a legacy of journalistic and philanthropic accomplishments and a large group of friends and family around the globe who will miss him dearly.

100% of this Memorial Charity Fund will be donated and divided among a group of causes important to Randall in his name and the names of all the donors including:

  • The Southeast Pamlico Volunteer Fire Department
  • The Stokesdale, NC Library
  • We are excited to announce the creation of the Randall Gregg Excellence in Journalism Award, where we will be honoring Randall's belief in independent watchdog oriented journalism. Each year moving forward, we will identify and award one recipient for this award to a journalist who exemplifies Randall's passion towards highlighting injusticies in the world and going out of their way to bring attention to worthy community causes. Typically these will be independent/entrepreneurial journalists who are dedicated to the cause - like Randall was - more than they are material means - so this award, while not life changing can have a meaningful and reinforcing impact.

Those who may be interested in taking a more active role in these causes, don't hesitate to notify us. (eric at techmediaco .com)

We will update all of you on final donation destinations and if there are any sponsorship ceremonies or aftermath stories involved, provide pictures and a a write up recap. Randy, this is one story we'll cover for you moving forward. We love and miss you very much.

This seems woefully inadequate in light of everything I got from Randy, but I guess this is the best I or anyone can do to help those who aspire to be everything he was in life...in journalism...in anything he touched and invariably made better or more meaningful. 3 years ago

Randy is away, yet ever near. His presence fills each day. His voice, his smile are everywhere - a memory away. And though he is no longer seen by family and friends, he lives because he was dearly loved and love can never end. 3 years ago

I'm very saddened about this. I met Randy back in 2001 when I was trying to put together Bronto. He was its first user and gave it the spark when it needed it most. I got to know him even better since then. What a great guy. He will be deeply missed. 3 years ago
