CHI is a disease causing dangerously low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia) due to the overproduction of insulin. Every year HI babies suffer permanent brain damage or death due to the effects of low blood sugars.
HI’s consequences are preventable; however tragically, HI is often overlooked, misdiagnosed, or even when detected, mistreated. Families with HI babies need on-going support as treatment is complicated, constant, and prolonged – many patients will battle hypoglycemia their entire lives.
This is the 3rd year the Raring to Go for CHI team rode their bikes in May in Philadelphia as part of the Million Dollar Bike Ride to raise funds for hyperinsulinism research. The funds the virtual teams raise will be added to the CHI Research Fund established by the Million Dollar BIke Ride. These funds and this project will be managed by the University of Pennsylvania and will be used for innovative, pre-clinical or clinical studies designed to improve the diagnosis, therapy, or quality of life for those affected by congenital hyperinsulinism. The University of Pennsylvania will match these funds!
