ACCESS TO JUSTICE!

Our mission is to raise legal defence funds to assist First Nations who enforce their rights and title to protect their traditional territories. Through our education programs, RAVEN transforms public awareness to eliminate environmental racism and create a collaborative new economy.

RAVEN'S 'SAVE EVERYTHING, STOP THE TAR SANDS' LEGAL DEFENSE FUND!

What's the biggest industrial project on the planet?  The Alberta Tar Sands.  What will push our planet past the tipping point for climate change... you got it.  And so the biggest project we have is a legal action launched by the Beaver Lake Cree Nation to stop the tar sands - AND they just beat back Canada and Alberta in court and were given the okay to proceed to trial.

(RAVEN started up because of the gross difference between the resources of those trying to protect the land, and industry or government.  We humbly think it's time to help out and make this a little fairer.)

Okay.. still reading?  This is the important part!!

This is HUGE - first time in Canada that the courts are allowing large-scale industry to be put on trial.  And you can be part of that.

The legal action is based on the 1982 Constitution and recent Canadian court cases, which establish that the meaningful exercise of treaty rights requires protection of sufficient natural habitat for the animals and fish to thrive. Habitat is what must be preserved under the law – habitat that Beaver Lake Cree Nation says is being destroyed by the heavy oil industry. These constitutional rights are the strongest environmental laws in Canada (and possibly the world) now that the Canadian federal government has gutted Canada’s environmental legislation.

This is critical. The fight of the Beaver Lake Cree to protect their hunting grounds and fishing waters is supported by those who see the massive destruction of the landscape as an environmental crime, and those who fear that the carbon released by the heavy oil projects may take the planet’s climate past the tipping point.

This is winnable. The law is clearly on the side of First Nations. The only barrier to justice and victory in this case is the high cost of the legal system. Canada and Alberta do not want to lose this case, and they are putting up a serious fight.  The good news (if you're still reading this is very cool!) is that the Beaver Lake Cree have the BEST lawyers signed on to fight for them - they stopped clear cut logging of Canada's oldest trees on Meares Island, and they beat back logging in central BC, getting court decisions that entrench Aboriginal rights.  They do a lot for free, but even lawyers have to eat now and then.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

OUR GOAL FOR BEAVER LAKE CREE - $1,000,000 - but we can do that in bite-sized chunks!

Because of donors like you, the band received a quarter of the funds needed by the end of 2012!  That was enough to make some court-ordered deadlines, and start the go-forward process toward a trial.

On March 22, 2013, the band goes to court again - and it seems likely the judge will set a trial date.  She is indicating early 2015!  That's just two short years to gather a lot of evidence and write a monumental argument.

Current needs:  Your donation could pay for something like this!

• Funding for expert wildlife & environmental impacts research and reports ($40,000 - $100,000 per report);
• Funding for historical research, analysis and reports ($40,000 - $100,000 per report).
• Funding for cumulative impact mapping (combining all the current activity, proposed activity and wildlife report to show the full extent of infringement) – approx. cost $250,000.
• Funding for a short video (2-3 minutes) to help raise the profile of this issue nationally and globally via YouTube and social media. ($5,000 - $8,000)

  All donations are significant!

This issue is everywhere now - and there's a lot of shouting about it, but not much is changing.  That's why THIS is different -  because it will lead to a tangible result in terms of tar sands expansion.
