Beyond the cautionary tale of industry abuse, ruined lives, and government corruption by the shale gas interests, there are the courageous stories of individual struggle and survival. Unable to work for over a year due to injuries suffered when his vehicle was hit at high speed from behind by an industry employee, daily life was a struggle before this "accident". His front door is across the road and just 500 feet from the notorious Costello 1,2 fracking site owned and operated by industry giant and Texas based Cabot Oil. His home in Susquehanna County is surrounded by dozens of fracking operations and compressor stations. His well water and that of his neighbors is contaminated not only with methane, but a toxic brew of BTEX, diesel fuel, and other cancer causing chemicals laced with radiation. You may have seen Ray and his contaminated, bubbling, sometimes flaming home water well (the color of which changes from sickly yellow, to green, to black from day to day) in numerous documentary films and videos including the Academy Award winning Gasland, and the sequel Gasland 2.
Ray has travelled across the United States from New York to California, often at his own expense, holding up a brown jug of Dimock water, and telling/ yelling his story to everyone and anyone who will listen. His home and well site have hosted visits from scientists and dignitaries from every corner of the United States and beyond, seeking to be educated and informed on the dangers of shale gas fracking. (Most recently Irish and Australian MP’s) His property is a regular stop on the much publicized “fracking tours”.
As a whistle-blower in a company town, Ray’s business as an independent mechanic and truck-driver has been blackballed, making it beyond difficult to make ends meet. Seeking work outside of the region has been complicated by the fact that he is the sole caregiver to a close relative that suffers from diabetes.
This fundraiser will help Ray get out of the weeds financially and back to work as soon as possible by eliminating the risk of confiscation of his property by the very government sworn to his protection. Ray has vowed to never be silenced and never sell out. His courageous story of rugged defiance and the example of his contaminated well site remain as a lynch pin in the fight against fracking interests everywhere.
