THE STORY:

Raymond Clark was born on November 20, 2000 with a congenital heart defect. He had open heart surgery the very first week of his life, then spent six weeks at the University of Michigan C. S. Mott Children’s Hospital. Despite two more open heart surgeries and numerous other procedures, he tried to grow up like any other little boy. He lived life to the fullest. On April 27, 2010, Raymond lost the battle, and passed away.

Christmas 2007 a young lady, Chelsey Grote, gave Raymond $100 for Christmas. He bought a small gift for himself, and his sister, then bought a remote control car for a child who had to spend Christmas in the Sanford’s Castle of Care Children’s Hospital. The next year someone gave him $500 to buy toys for some of the kids in the hospital, with some help from Karl and Paula at Wal-Mart, he got some nice toys to help make their Christmas a little brighter. Before his last Christmas with us, Raymond decided to focus on one family; by working with staff at Sanford’s Castle of Care, surprising one family Christmas morning. It has become known as Raymond’s gift.

After Raymond’s passing, we continued to keep what has become something of a tradition going. The Staff at Sanford’s Children hospital identifies a family, which has a child that will spend Christmas in the hospital. Then, we get gifts for everyone, including the mom and dad, and all the fixings for a proper Christmas dinner. Each year Raymond’s gift has gotten bigger.

We are hoping to keep this tradition going. We can’t do it without some help. In Raymond’s words, “being in the hospital isn’t any fun, but being in the hospital, on Christmas really sucks.”
