Razor Aquatics is a youth swim team based out of Redford, MI. Our program focuses on increasing the number of African American youth that participate in competitive swimming and training them compete at a high level. Our team is hosting our first annual dodgeball tournament fundraiser to raise funds for yearly training expenses. Facility rental expenses alone can cost over $27,000/yr.
We’re reaching out to supporters that would like to help our team provide the highest quality experience for our swimmers when it comes to training and competition. Razor Aquatics is a coach-owned swim team. This means all of our team expenses such facility rental fees, coaching fees, equipment costs, uniform costs, competition costs, etc., are paid for by our members. That also means the quality of our children’s swimming experience is limited by what our families can pay. This is where fundraising comes into play for teams such as ours. Successful fundraising events will help our swimmers receive abundant training hours, quality coaches, quality training equipment, and full access to competitive experiences. It takes fundraisers such as this one for us to keep swimming affordable for our members and to be able to provide discounts for families in need.
We’ve set a team goal to raise $34,200 by February 24, 2017. This equals the yearly membership fees of 30 Razor Aquatics families. That’s approximately the number of families we expect to compete on our team year-round this year.
HOW IT WORKS: Tournament Format
Each of our swimmers will put together a dodgeball team of 3-5 members comprised of friends, family, or acquaintances in the same age division. The age divisions are 9 & under, 10-12, 13-17, and 18 & up (adult). Team parents are invited to participate in the adult age division and represent their child. This will be a single elimination tournament with 3-round matches (unless a team wins the first two rounds). The winning dodgeball team in each age division will earn a 33% discount off total yearly membership fees for the family represented by the team (a savings of $380 for the family).
Each dodgeball team (with the exception of parent teams) has to raise at least $150 to enter the tournament. Siblings on different dodgeball teams have “mirrored fundraising amounts.” That means, what one sibling’s team raises counts for the other sibling’s dodgeball team as well. For every $100 raised over the $150 entry amount, gives that dodgeball team 2 free hits it can use at any time during the tournament. A free hit allows a team member to be hit during a dodgeball round and not have to sit out. However, each team in the adult division only gets up to 6 free hits.
Matches in each age division will be set up by highest fundraising teams against lowest fundraising teams. In the event that there is an uneven number of teams entered in an age division, the first round will be between the two lowest fundraising teams to eliminate one team and make it even.
NON-AFFILIATED DODGEBALL TEAMS
People that would just like to participate in the tournament and support our fundraiser without being on a swimmer’s team may also participate. They can put together a team of 3-5 members in a particular age division and raise/pay $150 to enter the tournament. Non-affiliated teams can choose which family they would like to pass the 33% team discount to in the event they win.
As mentioned earlier, the families represented by the winning teams in each age division will receive a 33% team membership discount for the year. The members of winning dodgeball teams in each age division will receive gold medals. The second place teams in each division will receive silver medals. The top 5 fundraising teams, regardless of tournament outcome, will also receive trophies. The largest trophy will go to the top fundraising team.
The dodgeball event will take place on Saturday, February 25, 2017. The exact time and location will be disclosed by December 31, 2016. Our team will be raising funds for this event from September, 2016 (beginning of our fall season) until Friday, February 24, 2017. All dodgeball teams must register HERE by Friday, February 17, 2017 to participate in the tournament.
