BENEFITING: Ann And Robert H Lurie Foundation
“BP For A Cause” initially started back in July of 2013 with Ricks good friend who was currently playing with the Washington Nationals, Adam LaRoche. Just months after Ricks diagnosis with Stage IV pancreatic cancer in which doctors gave him a 15% chance of making it through the year, Adam reached out to him and wanted to help keep his spirits up and inspire him. He brought Rick in with the team against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field to do batting practice. What started out as a way to inspire Rick lead to another batting practice in 2014 with Adam and the team. At that BP players initiated donating money for home runs he hit that day to Ricks main charity at the time, Team Carone. Since then Team Carone has become a non-profit Team Carone Foundation (501c3) in which we raise money through such events for cancer research, gifts of love for others battling cancer, and scholarships for high school student-athletes. These BPs inspired Rick to use his battle and testimony along with his love of baseball to help raise not only awareness but money for a cause bigger than himself. In spite of his continued battle and regular chemotherapy treatments he wanted to give back while he still had some fight left in him. Rick was passionate about using BP For A Cause as a way to raise money for Children’s Hospitals who specialized in children’s cancer. So in 2015 the first “Shut Down Cancer BP” was set up by Ricks friends Kristi Devert and Hunter Strickalnd with the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park on July 28. We set up a Go Fund Me account that was linked to Children's Cancer Charities across the U.S.,with hopes of raising as much as we could through the event. The MLB players associated with the event in San Francisco matched dollar for dollar what was raised through the Go Fund Me account. We were able to raise $32,355.00 from that one event. The money raised benefited UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, St. Jude's Children’s Hospital, and the players decided to donate their funds to our non-profit, Team Carone Foundation in Ricks honor. As a result of the success in raising money in San Francisco the Team Carone Foundation was chosen as the recipient charity for K Cancer by the San Francisco Giants. In 2016 we set up several BP For A Cause events with the San Francisco Giants, Miami Marlins, and the Chicago White Sox. Those events were on behalf of a young boy name McKai Malooley from Ricks hometown of Cary, Illinois. He was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer known as rhabdomyosarcoma that grows in muscle and soft tissue. Along with raising money for McKai, the funds raised by these 3 events totaling $10,462 were donated to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. One of the top children’s hospitals in the world that treats McKai. Ricks triple threat and what brought him into his 4th year battling cancer and defying the odds put against him was God, Family and Friends. He used his gift to turn his test into a testimony through such events as the MLB BPs and numerous events put on by the Team Carone Foundation that was started in his honor. Through the help of everyone, we will continue carrying on Ricks spirit of BP FOR A CAUSE of representing with higher purpose and shinning the light Rick has given us all. This years BP For A Cause will be held in San Francisco and Chicago.
Thank you and God Bless - Kristi Devert 'flying squirrel"
