BENEFITING: Kettering University
EVENT DATE: Aug 01, 2015
My father passed away on April 2, 2012, after a heroic battle with neuroendocrine cancer. He was an amazing guy - giving, caring, supportive, inspirational - and a fantastic father.
Following his passing, I was looking for a way to give back in his name, and decided that creating educational opportunities for others was a great way to do that. In early 2013 I established the Ronald D. Kowalski endowed scholarship at Kettering University (my alma mater). The scholarship is designated for first generation college students - neither of my Dad's parents had attended college - and its first recipient will be named this year. Because I don't have piles of cash sitting around, it will take me ~10 years to build up the endowment to a level where the scholarship becomes self-sufficient (~$25,000). I'm looking for your help in doing that, but I'm willing to earn your support! Last year, we raised just north of $6,500 - I'm hoping that we can improve on that and get to $7,500 this year!
Bridget and I (and possibly others) are participating in the Pittsburgh Triathlon on August 1, 2014 (the adventure variant). We will kayak 2 miles, bike 20 kilometers, and run 5 kilometers in support of my Dad's scholarship, and we've decided that getting a team of supporters behind us will provide a great advantage as we start training (We did the same tri in 2013, but it's been a while since we've been on a bike or in the water). Will you help support us on our journey? While we're willing to invest sweat equity into the venture, I'm also willing to invest with my wallet.
My challenge to you: Help us raise $5,000 for the scholarship fund to expedite the funding of the endowment. I will match $.50 of every dollar raised by the team (up to $2,500), and together we can cut another three years off of the establishment timeline and help additional first generation college students fund their education (we already cut off ~2.5 years last time)! Please help in whatever way you can - there is no donation or show of support too small. Remember, I will match your donation $.50 to every dollar! Your support is greatly appreciated and will be an inspiration in the coming months as we run, bike, and paddle in preparation.
