BENEFITING: Research Down Syndrome
ORGANIZER: Research Down Syndrome
EVENT DATE: Sep 15, 2012
My name is Torrie Caufield and I am running in the Air Force Half Marathon as a part of the Research Down Syndrome (RDS) team. I am originally from Wisconsin and attend the University of Dayton where I study Psychology. Ever since elementary school, I have had a passion for helping individuals with developmental disabilities, Down syndrome in particular, which is why I support the goals of RDS.
"RDS supports scientific studies directed towards understanding the sources of cognitive difficulties in persons with Down syndrome. RDS believes in the promise of a future where therapies will be available that will help improve memory, learning and communication in persons with Down syndrome. This will lead to increased life opportunities in education, employment, social interactions....perhaps a future where persons with Down syndrome might be able to live independently. Please join with the RDS Runners as their miles help RDS fund research that already has made extraordinary progress."
When I heard about Research Down Syndrome, I knew immediately that I wanted to run to support their cause. My friend, Katie, has Down syndrome and has inspired me in so many ways. Katie and I have been friends ever since we met in third grade. Throughout the years we have been in classes together, and we were in Best Buddies together in high school. Katie and I both love doing many of the same things, such as shopping and going out to eat at Panera. I have had so much fun with Katie going bowling (she is way better than me!), painting pottery, and dancing to Lady Gaga in my car. Katie is one of the most happy, fun, and beautiful girls I know, and I am so lucky to call her my friend.
I ran my first half marathon in May of 2012, and I have decided to run another half marathon to support Research Down Syndrome. I know, that with the extraordinary research that Research Down Syndrome will do with the money I raise, Katie, and other individuals with Down syndrome will be granted the opportunities that they deserve. I love Katie and am so proud of all that she has accomplished and know that she will accomplish much more in the future.
If you are interested in supporting Research Down Syndrome and supporting me in racing for the extraordinary, please see the donation section on my profile.
