Reach and Touch Gift Bags for Cancer Patients
Organized by: Karen Boone
More than 1,000,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with cancer each year. The American Cancer Society estimates, in 2015 there will be 38,180 new cases in Washington State. In 2014, 1,763 new cases were diagnosed within Spokane County. Cancer is the second leading cause of death and 50 years ago 1 in 4 people who developed cancer survived, today nearly half who develop cancer will survive the disease. The American Cancer Society has Cancer Resource Centers located inside Spokane area hospitals with trained volunteers who assist patients, family members, and caregivers by providing educational materials, referrals to available community resources, assistance with transportation, wigs, lead wear, and information on specific cancer topics. Each patient is offered a free gift bag and other items intended to provide comfort while undergoing treatment. In 2014, 3,157 cancer patients received assistance from a cancer resource center in Spokane. I am currently seeking financial donations to purchase items to fill gift bags that will be given to cancer patients who are battling this terrible disease. I am asking you to lend a hand of compassion for this worthy cause.
