BENEFITING: REACH BEYOND BORDERS
Reach Beyond Borders (RBB) is a Seattle organization that has partnered with La Mision, a group of Guatemalan docs, dentists and opticians since shortly after the end of the civil war there in 1996. Together, RBB and the staff of La Mision improve access to health care for rural, indigenous Guatemalans. In partnership with local auxiliary nurses, health promoters, and traditional birth attendants, they work to improve the local health infrastructure and health outcomes for the people they serve.
In February, I went with a team of Guatemalans and Americans to Solola, in southwestern Guate. Local nurses and comadronas (traditional birth attendants) had identified challenging areas in their practice, and they asked me to teach them on topics of their choosing. I conducted interactive classes on reducing infection and postpartum hemorrhage as well as identifying breech babies before they show up bum first, which tends to end badly . These three problems result in the needless deaths of thousands of women and children every year in this tiny country and leave thousands more orphans.
Safe delivery kits will give comadronas another tool to protect mothers, babies, and their families form the deadly consequences of living where they do. Let's make it better!
