BENEFITING: REACH FOR TOMORROW INC
EVENT DATE: Jul 10, 2014
For 20 years Reach For Tomorrow, Inc. (RFT) has raised funds to support middle school students who are largely low income and minority students on a one week experience on a college campus such as the USAF and US Naval Academies, the University of California at San Diego, San Jose State University, etc. Students are asked to complete 25 or more hours of community service, improve the 3 A's (Attitude, Attendance, and Achievement) in school, and participate in school based programs. In 2006 we included a web based academic remediation and enrichment program which allowed students to significantly improve Achievement. The web based academic program has improved reading by more than 1 grade level and math by 2 grade levels in less than 30 hours of use.
Nearly 4,500 students and chaperons have participated since 1993, and for 2014 we want to support 500 students and chaperons from communities across the nation at UCSD and Colorado State University.
Currently, we are targeting Surry, Virginia's Luther P. Jackson Middle School for support in 2014 as well as the Loveland School District and the Harrison District 2 School District in Colorado for both an academic remediation/enrichment program and a summer college experience. Funds will be used to support 90 stuents and 20 chaperons students both academically and for the college experience.
Students are formed into teams of 5 with a local adult chaperon who agrees to maintain contact with their team members for the ensuing high school years. We ask 8 contacts a year at first grading advisory and at the end of the grading period. This way the community continues to support the student and their family.
