Infant HIV Prevention Project at Reading Memorial HS
Organized by: Fundacion VIHDA
Our names are Elizabeth Trauger and Carolyn Powers. We are Seniors at Reading Memorial High School. We are leading the Infant HIV Prevention Project in our school with the support of 20+ RMHS students. This past summer, I, Elizabeth, had the opportunity to do an internship in Guayaquil, Ecuador with Fundacion VIHDA, an NGO dedicated to preventing mother-to-child HIV infection during pregnancy and birth of babies born to HIV-positive women.
During my internship at VIHDA I was able to spend time in Ecuador’s largest maternity hospital, where I witnessed how VIHDA provides assistance to HIV infected pregnant women so that their babies are born free of HIV. In order to achieve this, VIHDA must conduct thousands of tests on pregnant women and provide them with the necessary medicine. The cost for treating an HIV infected pregnant woman, so that she can give birth to a healthy child, is $550.
You can make a difference with your contribution. We urge you to make a donation to this cause so that we can raise enough funds ($2,200) to pay for treatments to give FOUR babies an opportunity to be born healthy and HIV-free.
