Illiteracy is a family issue.
Adults who cannot read were children who did not learn to read. When parents lack literacy skills or confidence, it impacts their children and perpetuates the illiteracy cycle for another generation.
Breaking that cycle means helping families, not just parents OR children. The key to a child's literacy success is their primary, and most influential role model: a parent.
That is where The Reading Tub can help. We are an all-volunteer nonprofit with the mission to increase family reading and literacy. Over the past 11 years, the Reading Tub has
- distributed nearly 11,0000 books to at-risk readers;
- published more than 2,500 book profiles,
- coordinated youth community literacy work with schools; and
- written hundreds of articles with activities for incorporating literacy into family life.
We are also curating a resource library for parents and educators that is updated nearly every day!
NOW it is time for the Reading Tub to leverage technology so that under-served families can have free literacy tools in the palm of their hand! The Family Literacy Integration Project (FLIP) is an app that will provide free, immediate access to activities, exercises, tips, articles, and reviews by families just like theirs..
FLIP makes it possible for parents to collect literacy tips during short breaks on the job, and then Use them when they're out and about with the kids: doctors' offices, the grocery store, even road trips!
The FLIP app is being built for and for use by struggling readers. With a primary graphic and audio interface, it is accessible to all adults, regardless of reading ability.
Help us establish strong reading skills in children by developing FLIP, an app for parents who need support. Your contribution brings us closer to affecting the lives of more than 150,000 children each year!
