ALL children have amazing potential! The Read Me A Story campaign will allow children from low-income communities to reach their potential by providing 88 storytimes and 440 books to Head Start sites in Van Nuys. $10 will buy two books, $25 will buy 5 books and $60 will buy one storytime. Our storytimes allow children to be active participants, emotionally and intellectually, in every story which enables them to share ideas and empathize with others. Each child also receives quality picture books to take home and add to their home library. Reading aloud cultivates life-long literacy and communication skills that develop oral language, positive social interaction, comprehension and a love for reading. According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children, by 3 years of age, there is a 30 million word gap between children from the wealthiest and poorest families. Reading stories to children and discussing the ideas and feelings inherent in them builds the vocabulary and intellectual concepts that create the foundation for success in school and in life. Research shows that children who participate in quality reading programs demonstrate earlier development of language, literacy, and mathematical skills regardless of ethnic or socio-economic background. Studies also prove that children who have rich and varied language experiences, especially if they are second language learners, have an easier time mastering reading and comprehending information. We work with children and their parents to help explore and nourish this potential so that they experience success in school and throughout their lives. Reading to children and discussing ideas and feelings creates the foundation for higher achievement and ensures success and productivity in the 21st century. The Read Me A Story Project is working to make sure all children are prepared to become responsible and creative adults who will be instrumental in developing thriving communities.
