In a nutshell, READ provides 1-1 tutoring for young struggling students - kindergartners and first grade children from the most disadvantaged school districts - giving them a chance to catch up to their peers at a critical early juncture in their education life. READ's kids have been identified by teachers as falling behind, but come from homes where extra help is unavailable. So READ trains local teens to be tutors, and provides the materials and a safe after-school or community based venue to provide basic reading skills through one-to-one tutoring.
This isn’t complicated, but it is absolutely critical: we give kids three of the simple things many of us took for granted as we grew up - strong reading skills, self esteem, and a safe place to learn both.
Since a modest beginning 13 years ago, READ has helped more than 11,000 at-risk children gain literacy skills they will need for the rest of their lives. And we have trained more than 9,000 teenagers, giving them an important opportunity to build job skills critical for a successful life; in fact, we are the second largest teen employer in NYC.
