I have the incredible opportunity to run in the 2013 Boston Marathon! In doing so, I hope to do some good, old-fashioned fund raising for Rutherford County's Read to Succeed.
Read To Succeed, the community literacy collaborative in Rutherford County, promotes reading, with an emphasis on family literacy. This non-profit initiative supports literacy programs and fosters awareness of the importance of reading. Read To Succeed began in 2003 as an initiative to promote and support literacy efforts in Rutherford County in collaboration with city and county schools.
In the ten years since its inception, Read To Succeed's programs have grown to serve thousands of Rutherford County residents. RTS family literacy programs work in conjunction with education students at Middle Tennessee State University to raise literacy rates in at-risk local students. Parents attend with their children at all of Read To Succeed's events to encourage the importance of reading at home. Thousands of free books and meals are given out each year in Read To Succeed's programs.
Read To Succeed's Adult Literacy Program started in 2005. The Adult Literacy Program works with adults 18 years-of-age and older to provide one-on-one tutoring in basic literacy at no cost to the learner. The program provides a free 12-hour training course to teach volunteer tutors how to work with adults. The tutors are then paired one-on-one with adult learners. Read To Succeed has tutored more than 800 adult learners in its program. The Adult Literacy Program also holds ESL classes throughout the county.
Read To Succeed also hosts several community events throughout the year, including Reading in the Schools Day, Reading Rally, UNPLUG & Read!, One Book Community Read, and the Read To Bee.
All of Read To Succeed's programs are FREE to learners and participants. The organization relies on grants, fundraising and individual donations to provide this vital service to Rutherford County. Even a donation as small as $5 can purchase up to two books for children in-need to keep.
