EVENT DATE: Jan 01, 2011
Ready to Learn is a project of the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce Charity Foundation. For more than five years, LAJCC members have helped first grade students from low performing LAUSD Title 1 schools to improve their reading and English language skills. We believe, and educators agree, that reading is the most important skill needed by students to assure academic success, and ultimately, the completion of high school.
During the monthly Saturday sessions, children receive one-on-one help with reading from a LAJCC member/volunteer. Hundreds of books are brought in so that students can select books to read that fit their reading level and interests. We want to instill a love of reading and a realization that reading can be fun. Students also do an art project related to their reading, helped by their volunteer. The volunteers are encouraged to spend time chatting with their student during lunch, which is provided at the end of each session. Each student is given a new book to take home and keep at the end of each session.
