Real Life Adventure's of the Mace Family
Organized by: valerie mace
Hi guys, have you ever been in a high speed chase? Well neither had I. Until this past May. Oh I thought we were taking our quick little family trip to visit my in-laws for their 60th Anniversary. Boy, was I in for a surprise! We approached the last leg of our Texas to Georgia trip in our trusty family van (2001 Honda Oddessy). As I prepared to apply my make-up en route( in the back seat, I casually turned around to observe not one or two but approximately 15 - 20 blaring bright blue & red lights and sirens bearing down on us about 300 -500 feet away. Ever have one of those slow-motion type moments where everything seems to slow to a sloths pace but actually occurs in a few split seconds, well I was there. "Ummm honey, you may want to pull ov...." was all that I managed to get out . As I turned my head to see, out of my peripheral vision appeared a state trooper unfurling some sort of serpentine contraption which appeared to have large metal spikes protruding from its spine. Funny thing was it was approaching our van with what seemed to be precision timing. Almost as if it had purposefully meant to collide with our van. In the midst of this a simultaneously sonic boom!! and hard surge to the left were heard and felt. My dear hubby had swerved to avoid what we later learned was a run away stolen truck pulling a trailer load of off-road ATV type vehicles. We, the twenty or so troopers and the stolen truck all pulled off at a nearby exit. We sat stunned in silence for a moment then began the check to make sure all the kids and passengers had made it safely. All kidding aside this was probably one of the most serious and potentially harmful accidents I have ever experienced. It all happened so quickly and the tire puncture device had done its work in stopping the run away truck. My daughter observed that the culprit had flipped into the ditch on the side where everyone exited. We watched as the weary young driver was led to one of the police vehicles. Needless to say there was no insurance coverage from his side of things. We learned after this incident that state governments are only very rarely held responsible for damage that is sustained in such an incident. So, log story short , our van was totaled. We have 3 kids 11, 13, and 14 who have to get to school, Dr.'s appointments, Soccer practice etc... We're raising money here to replace our van.
