People's Luncheon on Real Solutions to Gentrification

THE STORY:

In the past few years, San Antonio has seen a resurgence of redevelopment in its downtown area--the so-called "Decade of Downtown." For many longtime residents in the older neighborhoods of the city, downtown redevelopment has more accurately been a decade of developers, demolitions, and displacements. On Monday, June 23rd, the downtown promotions organization for the city will host a $75-a-plate "urban renaissance luncheon" on the topic of gentrification. As communities most directly impacted by the city's approach to downtown redevelopment, we would like to organize our own free luncheon on the impacts of and solutions to gentrification. However, we would also like to be able to send two community members into Centro San Antonio's luncheon to ask hard questions and offer real, community-based solutions.

Since registration costs are $75 per person, we would like to be able to raise $150 for registration and $50 for food for our free luncheon. If everyone chips in just a couple bucks, we can raise the money easily. We greatly appreciate your donations!

If the city would enforce it's own code and regulate slum lords this would disable a tool of gentrification ie getting rid of blight. It's much easier to slice the budget razor thin and pass the buck to developers but in the long run it undermines the cultural sustainability, equality and diversity of the city, . Fiscal considerations should not be the over riding factor in every aspect of city management. City government enforce your codes! 3 years ago

Most people are paying too much for rent and there is no mechanism to control rents in the city or protect existing affordable housing. We have a permanent un-housed and shelter-housed class and an increase in families homelessness. Our homes and neighborhood are under attack from opportunist developers who see income growth potential over prioritizing the human need for affordable (fair) housing. Why is San Antonio jumping onboard the GENTRIFICATION EXPRESS? Is this what we want? Please join us to change this pattern! 3 years ago
