Rear View Camera for Wheelchairs

Organized by: James McManus

My name is Jim McManus. I am a BBK amputee. I lost both my legs below the knee in 2011 due to complications from diabetes. That life changing experience has led me to develop CHECK YOUR 6 . CHECK YOUR 6 is a rear view camera system for wheelchairs which provides the user with safety and self confidence. It displays a view directly behind the chair and a view of the rear casters on a user facing monitor. The system can be attached to any wheelchair using a variety of components from RAM Mounting Systems. Campaign funds will be used to take my "Proof of Concept" to "Production Prototype". Six (6) PP units will be built and field tested. The feedback from these field tests will result in ten (10) production units for sale. Any funds raised beyond the goal will increase the number of production units for sale. A local engineering and manufacturing company has extended a standing offer to develop the units. My goal is to begin this process as soon as possible. This project is important to me as an amputee. When I lost my legs I "figuratively" had to reinvent myself. I retired from NC State Government as an IT Manager. My project management skills and "McIver, make something out of nothing attitude" have led me to create a system that will be highly beneficial to a large number of wheelchair users. While it is necessary to be profitable in this endeavor, the greatest pleasure I will gain from it will be to see users everywhere experience the safety and freedom of wheelchair travel that I do being able to see the environmment space around me. You can be a part of this experience by making your contribution knowing that you are supporting an effort to imorove life experiences for those who navigate using a wheelchair. I will be especially grateful because without the funding I do not have the financial resources to deliver this experience to others.
