Give me a REASON TO RUN 26.2 miles
Every $1 invested in early childhood learning returns a minimum of $7 dollars down the road. Help United Way Silicon Valley and I make your dollars count by creating preschool programs for disadvantaged children in East San Jose's Alum Rock School District. Give me a REASON TO RUN!
On June 16th, I will be running in the Wipro San Francisco Marathon. Training for this race will be difficult so I am asking that you give me a reason beyond personal fitness by helping me prepare children for Kindergarten in East San Jose! Here is what you can do to be part of this success:
1) Make a tax-deductible contribution to support United Way Silicon Valley and my efforts in creating pre-kindergarten programs for 6 elementary schools. Giving levels start at just $26—only $1 for every mile I will run!
2) Spread the word - please! Above anything else - SEND THIS TO EVERYONE YOU CAN! Share my story and let's collaborate to fill a great need for children in East San Jose.
LEVELS TO GIVE
$26 - Get access to my training blog and follow my progress (if you give me an email address during checkout). You get the rights to get on my case if you think my training is below expectations! I am running my butt off for this cause, make sure I am doing it right!
$260 - Wow, you're awesome. Expect a personalized letter of appreciation and be the first to get results on the outcome of this project! Have the opportunity to see your impact first hand.
Anything between, below or above. Just as every little run matters during my training, every penny counts towards this cause. YOUR REASONS TO GIVE ARE MY REASON TO RUN!
Why this is important to me: As a runner, I know the benefits of getting a head start. Simply showing up on race day is not enough; it takes a lot of training and preparation for everything to come together. Children entering kindergarten without exposure to an academic setting and with little-to-no practice in basic reading, writing, or math skills are already a BIG step behind—a gap that only gets wider as the race continues.
What does this mean?
Children are coming into Kindergarten unprepared with important school skills such as social/emotional development, language and communication. With one in four members of our community lacking the income to make ends’ meet—an even higher proportion in many of the neighborhoods Alum Rock School District serves—kindergarten readiness is not a priority when it competes with families' basic needs. And with $10 million dollars in budget cuts this year in this District alone, there is a great need for our help.
How your donation will make an impact: As somebody who is lucky enough to work with some of these children once a week, I have seen the benefits of collaboration in their learning and development. When people come together over education, the result is a much more empowered community. One of the best parts of our programs is that parents will be expected to participate, giving them the chance to learn how to be proactive in their child's learning even if they never experienced it for themselves. Thank you for all the children you are helping to give a head start!!!
