THE STORY:

Like some of you Americans out there, I recently received a letter from my health insurance company letting me know that, thanks to the Affordable Care Act, my brand of birth control would now be completely free.

I am, of course, happy to have a few extra bucks in my pocket, if only because I think that I am due for making responsible health decisions. However, I have a good salary and great benefits (thanks to my union), so honestly that extra $20 doesn’t make that much of a difference to me.

So I’ve decided that instead of wasting that $20 on another beer and pizza night, I’m going to donate it, every month, to my local abortion access fund. These funds help women who would otherwise fall through the cracks of our (notoriously cracked) health care system, who are vulnerable to the political posturing of an election year. They are women who might have been uninsured before the ACA, to whom $20/month actually means quite a bit.

The funds are usually volunteer-run and barely able to keep up with the demand for their services. I’ve raised money for them in the past, and for my birthday, I am asking my friends and family to do the same with me.

I am encouraging everyone who is able to consider donating the money you would have spent on birth control to an abortion fund or other reproductive health organization in your area. The government has made some progress to ensuring health access for their citizens—until they are able to make this more complete, let’s make sure that our friends, families, and neighbors can make the right decisions for themselves and their families.
