Thanks for stopping by my page :) I am super stoked to be running the 2012 ING NYC Marathon!!! This will be my first and am proud to run for The Chicago Diabetes Project "Cellmates on the Run" which aims to help those with diabetes.
Diabetes effects over hundreds of thousands of people in the United States. One of those affected includes my younger sister, Siobhan, who developed the disease at the tender age of 8. Her childhood was not typical compared to most children her age, as candy was off limits and she needed to inject herself with insulin three times a day. As my sister grew older, her symptoms worsened. In 2006 she needed to be treated with dialysis to survive. It was only a matter of time before she was placed on the transplant list for both kidneys and the pancreas. After many years of painfully waiting, she finally received a second chance at life as a donor was found! This was amazing news, however, during the waiting period my sister lost the gift of sight and received a considerable amount of stomach damage. Today, my sister is recovered from surgery, but must take medication everyday and is currently preparing to have another surgery for a pacemaker so she can digest her food properly. When I told her I wanted to run the NYC marathon in her honor, she was very excited and looks forward to me crossing the finish line!
If you wish to make a donation :D you have a couple options listed below:
Option #1 - you can simply make a donation (no amount is too small ;) by clicking on the link above
