BENEFITING: Sanctuary for Families
EVENT DATE: May 01, 2016
After my sophomore year of college, I spent my summer as an intern with Sanctuary for Families, New York’s leading service provider and advocate for survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking, and related forms of gender violence. I worked with their Courtroom Advocates Project, a program that trains law students to represent individuals seeking orders of protection in family court. During my first week, I was sent to shadow a staff attorney at the Brooklyn family court. Did I get lost on the way there? Obviously. But more importantly, I saw the impressive and indispensable work Sanctuary was doing and met some of the clients whose hope for the future was restored because of Sanctuary's support.
From that first week, it was clear to me that Sanctuary provided much more than basic legal and clinical services. Sanctuary and its staff were saving lives and equipping clients with the tools and resources to make independent choices about whatever comes next.
Sanctuary has helped to instill in me a drive to fight against gender-based violence and discrimination in all of its forms, and I am excited to bike alongside Sanctuary for Families on their team in the 2016 TD Bank 5 Boro Bike Tour on Sunday, May 1st! I am doubly excited to bike it alongside my dad, the man who taught me how to ride a bicycle by tricking me into thinking that he was holding on to the back of my two-wheeler and then letting me bike into a tree.
Thank you for your support. If all goes well, fifteen delivery trucks won't be parked in the bike lanes and I won't careen into the East River.
