THE STORY:

Rebecca Simonton wrote -

Climb Out of the Darkness is the annual awareness raising and fundraising event for Postpartum Progress, a nonprofit focused on supporting pregnant and new moms with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders like postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, postpartum OCD, postpartum psychosis and pregnancy depression.

Rebecca's passion: ~~I feel so passionate about raising awareness for women's mental health issues related to child birth because I was a healthcare provider who knew next to nothing about mental health or how to access resources, and neither did any doctor I asked. I was brushed off, told it was normal, and offered very little support after months of trying to feel better on my own.  If I had such a hard time finding appropriate care, I can't imagine the struggle of the everyday mom.  Postpartum Progress is focused on providing resources, educational information for patients and providers so that symptoms are recognized and treated earlier, de-bunking myths and stigmas which prevent moms from seeking help in a timely fashion, and peer to peer support from women who have recovered from this temporary and treatable illness.
Please join me in a symbolic walk to celebrate my own survival, support mothers currently suffering too afraid to speak out, raise community awareness, and raise funds for the best resource for maternal mental illnesses- www.Postpartumprogress.com

Thank you,

Rebecca

Houston, TX Climb out of the Darkness 2014:

Marvin Taylor Walking Trail @ Hermann Park

It's a lovely walk (I'm not a marathon runner, I'm a regular mom) The walk is a little less than 2 miles.  I love this trail because much of it is shaded by beautiful oak trees which helps with the Texas summer heat issue.  I have not decided on an official time yet, but it will probably be between 8:30-9:30am.  (I'll post official time as the date gets closer)

"The Climb" is a symbol of the climb out of the darkness of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, whether you are a long-time survivor or someone who is still climbing or someone who cares about the health of pregnant and new moms.

Help us raise money so that we can continue to raise awareness of how women are devastated by perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, make sure women know what they need to know about PPD, eliminate stigma and support the mamas who need it.

And now to get climbing!
