In March 2015, I will be thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail. Why? Because it's awesome, it's there, and I can. While planning my trip, I thought a lot about how fortunate I am to be able to do this. Not everyone can just pack up and go. I also realized, that I'm doubly fortunate, because not everyone can take to the woods when they want.
I decided that I want to join the throngs of other hikers who are raising awareness/funds for various causes and non-profits. There are plenty of people hiking for things like cancer research, mental illness programs, foreign orphanages, etc. I thought long and hard about what I feel passionately about. I have a soft spot for the underdogs. I have a soft spot for kids who are growing up in environments that hold them back. So... I decided I wanted to champion a program that takes underprivileged and inner city kids on hikes. I have an opportunity to hike and I want to give that same opportunity to others who would not otherwise have it.
I am blogging about all of this at http://atproject2015.blogspot.com.
