THE STORY:

The playground at the Charles Sumner Elementary School in Roslindale, MA was tragically destroyed in a fire that was intentionally set on the night of May 23rd, 2016.  Students were devastated when they came to school the next morning to find ashes where they usually play.  In the nicest months of the school year, these children will be playing inside.

The staff, parent council and friends of the Sumner school are asking for your help as we work together with BPS and the City of Boston to rebuild and rejuvenate the spirits of the community.  Specifically, we will use funds raised to

  • Replace the physical play structure that was lost in the fire
  • Restore the ground and landscaping in the area that was burned
  • Move the play space to a more visible location to deter further vandalism
  • Improve security in the play area so that such a senseless act cannot be repeated
  • Meld playground rebuilding plans with playground expansion plans that were already in the works before the fire
  • Provide play equipment such as sidewalk chalk, jump ropes and hula-hoops that our children can use while waiting for the playground to be rebuilt
  • Provide increased field trip experiences while our children cannot get outside on school property

Please share this site widely through email and social media.  Every little bit helps us to improve our facilities for the nearly 600 students who come to the Charles Sumner School every day.

From all of the students, families, staff and the greater school community, thank you for your support.

Together, we will rise from the ashes!

NUESTRA HISTORIA:
