In a tiny African country, we have the chance to help refurbish and equip an elementary school. Praia Francesa School in Sao Tome & Principe has 527 students and could use a little help in 2012.
We got to help with the Almas Elementary school project last year. Projects repainted all of it, inside and out, fixed the wall and all the windows. Fixed the electrical system too. Gave them bathrooms and running water and an enclosed kitchen area also, so they didn't have to worry about an open cooking fire on the school grounds.
The NGO we work with there, STeP UP, has the Praia Francesca project planned and staffed but needs about $11,500 for bathroom repair, water, kitchen (stove & refrigerator), an office computer, paint and glass, electrical fixtures, and some other basics.
The building is structurally sound, fortunately. Safety and sanitation concerns are at the top of the list for the project. School materials are part of the plan, too. Photos are from summer and fall '11. Nice folks.
If you'd like to lend a hand, here's your chance.
UPDATE: JUN '12. Lots of progress; the first 3 pictures are new from our visit. Paint, bathrooms, some kitchen improvements. More to go (like a kitchen stove), but when we visited, the staff and kids were pleased to show off what had been accomplished. Water is still a problem; we're working with the city water department on that one; it's been off for more than six months now. Always something. :)
