BENEFITING: STATE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA FOUNDATION
EVENT DATE: Oct 16, 2010
As you may know, I graduated from the University of Iowa in 2009. Even though I’ve lived in St. Louis for over a year, I’m still a Hawkeye at heart. That’s why I was concerned about the flooding that occurred in Iowa this summer, just 2 years after the devastating flood that ruined homes, buildings and roads all over Iowa.
During the spring of 2008, I witnessed the flood damage to Iowa City and the University of Iowa firsthand. I had to alter my routes around Iowa City to avoid flooded or damaged areas, and could not access many parts of campus. My friends and I spent hours working with other volunteers to pile sandbags in front of the Iowa Memorial Union and the Voxman Music Building. One of the most heartbreaking sights for me involved Hancher Auditorium. I was fortunate enough to work at Hancher for a year before the flood. During that time I saw nationally acclaimed and local musicals, plays, symphonies, comedians, dance and many other artistic performances. I was even lucky enough to sing on the stage with one of the University’s choirs. I also got to work with a wonderful staff that really treasured promoting arts in Eastern Iowa.
Since the flood completely destroyed Hancher Auditorium, many Iowans have lost great opportunities to participate in performing arts. During the 2008-2009 season, Hancher staff and performances relocated to several different venues in the Iowa City area and have since expanded to Cedar Rapids and other Iowa cities for various performances. The Hancher staff are dedicated to providing quality entertainment to Iowans even without a permanent home. Although Hancher will receive assistance from FEMA in order to rebuild, it is estimated that millions of additional dollars are needed to bring back this fantastic auditorium.
In light of this, I am asking you to help me support Hancher in their rebuilding efforts and quest to continue to provide quality seasons for Iowans in the aftermath of the flood. Now that the shock has worn off, it is easy to forget that Hancher is still in need. Please help me support Hancher by making a donation of $10, $25 or $50 to the University of Iowa Foundation.
