Villar Family's Fundraiser:

Rebuilding From Typhoon Haiyan

Villar Family

The most powerful typhoon to ever make landfall cut a massive path of destruction across the Central Philippines on November 8, 2013. While the images of the devastation were focused around the city of Tacloban and island of Leyte, other islands and communities across the Central Philippines suffered as much damage. Because they did not recieve as much international attention, there's been little aid for Northern parts of Panay and Cebu.
When the storm hit, Chicagoans Ray and Liela Villar were in Northern Panay, working on sustainable farming and fishing, promoting social justice and feeding the hungry, Their house became a refuge for several families during the four terrifying hours as 165 mile an hour winds roared. Once the winds calmed and rains stopped, they emerged to find that their house was the only one left standing in their village.
Instead of returning to Chicago, they stayed to help. They organized the effort to clear away all the debris and reopen the roads. With the help of their friends and family in the U.S., they've become a beacon of hope for the people around them. They sent over funds, food and supplies weeks before the first international or government aid arrived.
Their home became a makeshift relief center as they fed and sheltered scores of people, faciliated the first aid and medical help for the sick and injured, and also provided tools, nails and building materials for people to rebuild their homes.
As word spread of the work they've been doing, they have been overwhelmed by appeals for help. Having a big heart, they've been unable to turn people away. Besides helping people rebuild their homes, the couple is now working to rebuild schools and churches destroyed by the storm. They can't do it alone. They need help. By donating to a simple and humble couple that aren't into riches or fame, every cent will go directly to the people who are truly in need.
