Did you know that 1 in 4 women is a victim of domestic violence? Did you know that every year 5.5 million children are exposed to domestic violence? These figures won’t change without the commitment of the entire community! I am contacting you today to ask for your support in breaking the cycle of domestic violence. We can change these horrific statistics and make sure that every woman and child is safe from violence if we stand up to it TOGETHER!
That’s why I will be putting on a pair of heels on Thursday, October 4, and joining hundreds of others to Walk a Mile in Her Shoes in Downtown San Diego. This great event raises much needed funding for the YWCA of San Diego County’s Becky’s House® Domestic Violence Program. The YWCA began the annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event in October 2008 as a fun, light-hearted way to build awareness of the prevalence of domestic violence and its negative impact on the community.
All of the services provided by Becky’s House® support the individual’s journey from victim to survivor to achiever. The program includes a 30-60 day domestic violence emergency shelter, a 24-Hour emergency hotline, and four transitional housing programs for survivors of domestic violence and their families. Becky’s House® serves more than 500 women and children and receives nearly 2,500 hotline calls each year.If you would like to learn more about the YWCA’s important work in this area, please visit their website at www.ywcasandiego.org.
