THE STORY:

This is my best best friends story... Six years ago, my second sister and my best friend was diagnosed with a rare type of tumor by the name of a Thalamus Cavernous Malformation. As all of you are probably thinking what is a Thalamus Cavernous Malformation, it is a rare tumor composed of blood vessels that can hemorrhage, bleed or she could have an aneurism at any given time. After being diagnosed her junior year of high school, the only way for me to explain it to you is that she went to pick up her pen and it had felt like she had never written before. She sat down with 9 of the top neurologist in South Florida but was told that she had an 87.7% chance of being paralyzed on the right side of her body. A risk as most of you may know Karissa was not willing to take. Making it through college at Florida State University, with a Bachelors of Science in Communications and a minor in Hospitality was one of her proudest accomplishments. It's funny cause she never once went to the disability services and reported her illness, typical Karissa. She amazingly enough became ambidextrous and taught her self how to do everything with her left hand. With the tumor being something she could live with she was only required every 6 months to track it's growth. For the past six years there was really never anything to worry about. She's singly handedly is the most determined person I know. She interned with Live Nation for 5 months, moved to NYC where she redefined the term gypsy, interning with Red Light Management and working part time at The Agency Group. Eventually, she landed her dream job with Live Nation as a Booking Assistant and I couldn't be more proud. Unfortunately, on December 12th, 2015 she was told that she was told that she needed immediate brain surgery. Something that all, believe me, took us by surprise. She was told that her tumor doubled in size and had to be removed like yesterday. She was referred by her neurologist, Dr. Dokson and her neurosurgeon, Dr. Zorman to the best of the best, Dr. Spetzler, in Phoenix, Arizona. Karissa was sent to the Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital on January 19, 2016 where she first met Dr. Spetzler and his team. On January 21st at 5:30am Karissa went into surgery not considering the possible outcome of having major brain surgery. After 7 hours Dr. Spetzler felt positive that he was able to remove the Cavernous Tumor. Karissa was admitted to ICU for 5 days then moved to Neurological recovery for 2 days. Karissa's parents had to make a decision to keep her in Arizona for Acute In-Patient therapy or bring her back to Florida to just admit her into a Acute In-Patient Rehab with them not knowing anything about her case. The decision made was to have Karissa and her mother, Sandy, stay in Phoenix and continue her recovery at St. Joseph's Barrows Neurological Rehab Center for 2 weeks where she received hours of Occupational, Physical, Speech and Psychological Therapy. Karissa just returned home on Thursday, February 11, 2016 (Woohoo!) and now will continue out patient rehab at Memorial Rehabilitation Institute. Karissa will also need special glasses to help with her vision along with Neuro Eye Therapy for the next year. As we all know Karissa is fun-loving, life of the party and overall a phenomenal human who would never ask anyone for help…but I’m asking all of our friends and family to help out. For those of you who know Karissa, she is the most selfless human who's always concerned about making sure others are comfortable before ever considering her own needs or personal agenda. Today I am asking from the bottom of my heart to help raise her up and help relieve any burden from her recovery with a donation or just a positive thought. She's got a long road to recovery of intense rehab which will be paired with personal 24/7 care bills that we just don't know to what to expect. Anything is greatly appreciated and will no doubt help bring my best friend back to her loving and awesome self. Please donate and share to anyone who has a heart for helping those in need...I will forever be grateful and when Karissa is back we will no doubt have the BIGGEST celebration and you ALL are invited because it together WE MAKE IT WILL HAPPEN. Thank you and God Bless, Victoria Trapani aka. Vicky
