BENEFITING: Executives Without Borders USA
EVENT DATE: Aug 15, 2012
In February 2012 the Off the Mat Global Seva Challenge - Haiti participants traveled to Haiti on a Bare Witness tour. While there we saw some confronting conditions and met some amazing people doing remarkable work to rebuild and heal the country. One of the things that we all noticed while in Haiti was that trash and recycling of glass, cans and bottles was a major problem. Since being back we have found an organization - Executives Without Borders -that is working to build a recycling infrastructure by building recycling centers. The cost to fund one of these centers is $25,000 and we want to fund one! We know that together we can create thousands of well paying, sustainable jobs, help the environment and reduce the spread of disease. We can once again reveal Haiti’s beauty and make it an attractive place for foreign investment and tourism. Will you help move Haiti forward?
Please see below for a detailed description of the Ramase Lajan Recycling Program.
Ramase Lajan, “Picking up Money” in Créole, was developed as a sustainable and immediately actionable solution to several major problems throughout Haiti. First and foremost, the program is a realistic and sustainable solution to recycling the hundreds of millions of tons of plastic that is clogging the canals, heaping up on roadsides and washing up onto Haiti's otherwise beautiful beaches nationwide.
The program also promotes sustainable job creation and income generation across Haiti. Ramase Lajan empowers Haitians, and especially Haitian women, allowing them to earn significant incomes to support their families and transform their circumstances.
The basics of the business model:
- People collect plastic and sell it to a Ramase Lajan Center at a publicized fair market price
- The Center sorts, crushes and transports the plastic to Haiti Recycling
- Haiti Recycling reimburses the Center's payout costs, provides monies to cover transport costs and pays out a guaranteed profit margin
- Haiti Recycling washes and grinds the plastic into a valuable flake product and sells it on the world market
- Haiti Recycling uses its profits to buy more plastic from the communities
Our Program has Three Phases:
Phase 1: Expand collection and harvesting of plastic, creating sustainable jobs and incomes through a network of independently owned and operated neighborhood collection centers.
Phase 2: Build Haiti Recycling’s capacity to further process recycled
plastic, creating additional employment and increasing the value
per ton of plastic collected.
Phase 3: Drive investment in Haiti to build factories that turn recycled
plastics into products for domestic use and export.
Plastic Recycling = Sustainable Jobs & Economic Growth
Initial capital investments are needed to build the collection centers. After the initial investment is made, the centers and associated incomes are sustained through revenues from selling the collected plastic.
Together we can create thousands of well paying, sustainable jobs, help the environment and reduce the spread of disease. We can once again reveal Haiti’s beauty and make it an attractive place for foreign investment and tourism.
Won’t you help move Haiti forward?
