BENEFITING: Sundara Fund Inc
The problem: The Bukompe-Kyetinda Refugee Camp (in Mubende District, Uganda) is one of the places where Sundara distributes soap and runs hygiene education trainings. Recently it has come to our attention that there is a severe water crisis in the community - a few contaminated and stagnant swamp ponds are the only sources of water, for which they have to walk 4-7 km each day (and 15 km in the dry season). The residents of this community have fled genocide and ethnic conflict in Rwanda, DRC and post-conflict areas of Uganda. They represent 600 households (4000 people) who are permanently settled in this location.
Our solution: We have partenered up with Drink Local Drink Tap, a US-based NGO whose mission is to build borehole wells in East Africa. Their team has conducted a water survey on September 2nd at the camp and have identified two favourable points for drilling a borehole well. They can build a borehole well for us, but are not able to help us financially, as their current funds are already allocated to other borehole well projects. Drilling a borehole 70-80m deep using PVC and Stainless Steel quality materials will cost $9,500 USD (official quote obtained on September 29, 2016).
Apart from the funds raised on this Crowdrise page, we have raised $1,440 USD so far (last updated Oct 3, 2016).
