For 70 years United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has been working in more than 190 countries and territories to put children first and has been there for children in danger. UNICEF helps save more children’s lives by providing health care and immunizations, clean water and sanitation, nutrition, education, emergency relief and more. Case study: Child justice in Bolivia -- Gabriela’s story Currently 2.2 million children in Bolivia are victims of violence. In 2013, the Bolivian government integrated ‘Gessell Chambers’ (child-friendly support units) into the existing justice system. Gessell Chambers, together with therapeutic care centers, help protect children who are victims or witnesses of crime. Thirteen year old Gabriela was abandoned by her biological mother, and grew up with her grandmother. Left alone all day, she was repeatedly raped by an elderly neighbor. After she gave birth to her son, Gabriela began receiving counseling at a therapeutic care center. Her increased confidence and enhanced support system enabled her to return to education.
