THE STORY:

Dear friends,    As many of you know, I have been training to run the NYC Marathon which is scheduled for this Sunday. The decision by Mayor Bloomberg and the New York Road Runners to move forward with the marathon just 6 days after Hurricane Sandy has generated quite a bit of controversy. While our family came through the storm unscathed, there are many thousands of people who still lack power and/or a place to stay and countless others who have lost everything.   Those who believe the race should be held argue for the economic benefits to the city and for demonstrating a sense of resiliency and spirit at a time of great challenge. Those who believe the race should be cancelled or postponed argue that it's unseemly to hold what is essentially a parade just 6 days after lives were lost and hundreds of thousands of people left without homes or power or transportation, and that it's wholly inappropriate to divert any resources (first responders, hotel room capacity, food, etc.) from those in need. I believe the best decision would have been to postpone the race, though I appreciate the challenge of doing so. Since the announcement that the race is on, I have wrestled with my own feelings about whether to participate and have come to appreciate that there is a long and sustained recovery effort which lies ahead, particularly outside the confines of Manhattan.   I have decided to use this conversation as a platform to raise money for the American Red Cross and their relief efforts here in NYC. I've joined this Crowdwise campaign and hope that you will make a donation, no matter how small. I will personally match all donations to the best of my ability.  Whether you support this campaign or choose another outlet, I hope you will take note of the extreme challenges many here will face.
Thanks,

Andrew

PS: I still haven't decided on my participation and will do so tomorrow.

Support Relief Efforts for Hurricane Sandy

Your contribution will go to the American Red Cross and will provide critical support to those in need.

The large and powerful storm affected as many as 60 million people in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, and the Red Cross has workers and relief supplies in place to provide help to people affected by Sandy. More than 7.3 million homes and businesses are in the dark and thousands have been displaced from their home.

With more than 400 disaster workers mobilized, nearly 100 emergency response vehicles activated and around 200,000 ready-to-eat meals shipped, the Red Cross has geared up for a large response to this large and powerful storm. Thousands of people across the country sought Red Cross shelters since Sunday.

“This will be a large, costly relief response and the Red Cross needs help now,” said Charley Shimanski, senior vice president of Disaster Services for the Red Cross. “People can help by making a donation to support American Red Cross Disaster Relief.”

Financial donations help the Red Cross provide shelter, food, emotional support and other assistance to those affected by disasters like Hurricane Sandy.

Please donate any amount that you can to help the American Red Cross provide these critical services. Go even one step further and select the "Create Your Own Fundraising Page" button on the right to become a fundraiser for this cause.
